Halal Certification

What Is HALAL?

HALAL means, something is permitted and lawful in the Muslim community, it refers to the food that they eat according to the Islamic laws. Muslims face problems to find out the halal food products specially outside the Muslim countries even sometimes they consume non-halal food products in their own Muslim countries. Mostly processed foods ingredients sources are not halal due to lack of knowledge at processor/manufactures side. These challenges are not limited to the processed food even meat slaughtering units overlooked to comply zabiha process according to the permitted way for it. Purpose to develop the Halal standard by Muslim world is to overcome these kinds of challenges at processing/manufacturing side as well as to create the awareness on consumer side to always pick the halal certified food and oral contact products.

HALAL is an internationally recognized standard and provides the best framework in setting up HALAL sharia requirements as well as some basic food safety requirements such as personal hygiene, GMPs, pre-requisites, facility infrastructure and internal audit etc. where an organization in food chain needs to demonstrate its ability to identify & control the halal sharia compliances in order to ensure that the food is Halal and safe for human consumption. It is a voluntary standard. Mostly international corporations, retailers demand Halal certification from their suppliers as well as Govt. regulatory authorities motivating to local manufacturers to adopt this certification to secure the local and international market of HALAL products. Halal certification can also help the organization to flourish in new markets.

Most of the countries have formed their own accreditation bodies to authorize the certification bodies for Halal Certification. Accreditation and certification bodies charge fee against their services. Accredited certificate issued by any of accredited certification body is accepted worldwide.

HALAL Certification Process

After the finalization of an agreement with the client, experts of VUT visit at client’s premises and conduct the complete gap analysis of the existing system against the HALAL standard, and discuss the gap report with the management. Identified gaps could be in documents, implementation, employee awareness, processing, traceability and verification of ingredients, and statutory and regulatory compliances. We commence work according to the agreed timelines as per the final gap report and proceed with the audit once all the documentation, implementation, and other requirements are done. Our technical team provides complete assistance, support, and cooperation throughout the process to make the certification audits successful on the first attempt.

HALAL certificate is not awarded once-and-for-all but must be renewed before the expiration of the certificate. After applying for the audit to the certification body, they conduct the initial audits in two stages; the first is Stage one audit and the second is Stage two audit. After the successful conduction of the audit, the certification body issues the certificate of validity of one year till the next yearly surveillance audit thus in three years of the certification cycle, the certification body conducts two surveillance audits with one year of intervals. Basically, audits will be conducted every year for a period of three years. After the completion of three years of the audit cycle, a re-audit will be conducted to continue the process of certification.
